Why Healthspan Matters More Than Lifespan—and What You Can Do About It

“Do not go gentle into that good night,

Old age should burn and rave at close of day;

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”

– Dylan Thomas

Dylan Thomas’ famous poem isn’t just about death. At least, not directly.

If you’ve never heard it before, you’ll enjoy this powerful performance by the inimitable Michael Sheen:

“The dying of the light” can mean many things—but it’s not just life itself that fades; it’s our ability to live it fully. The slow loss of function. The creeping limitations. The moment you realise you can’t do what you once took for granted.

That’s what we’re really fighting against.

Lifespan vs Healthspan: What’s the Difference?

Lifespan is how long you’re here. Healthspan is how long you can actually enjoy it.

It’s one thing to be alive at 85. It’s another thing entirely to be hiking in the hills, playing golf, and running around with your grandchildren at 85.

We don’t just want to live longer—we want to extend the good part of life—the part where you can move freely, think clearly, and do the things you love (without needing a nap halfway through!).

“I Want to Walk to the Mailbox on the Day I Die.”

Dan John put it perfectly:

“I want to be able to walk to the mailbox on the day I die.”

It’s not about avoiding death—that’s a losing battle.

It’s about pushing back the decline. It’s about staying independent and being able to do the things you enjoy for as long as possible.

This doesn’t mean trying to run marathons in your 90s (although why the hell not!). It means being able to get off the floor without help. To walk the dog. To enjoy your favourite sport. To live life without limits right to the finish line.

Stack the Odds in Your Favour

Let’s be honest: we don’t get to choose our health. You can do all the right things and still be unlucky.

And yeah, we all know someone who smoked, drank, never exercised—and still made it to 95! But for the rest of us, we can stack the odds in our favour.

It’s never too late to start—but the sooner we do, the better.

Resist the Decline

There’s an assumption that aging has to mean decline. That it’s natural to slow down, ache more, and stop doing the things we love.

But what if we stopped believing that story?

What if we trained for life—not for how we look, but to stay capable and confident for as long as possible?

What if we treated fitness as a way to rage against the creeping loss of strength and independence?

Train to Stay Ready

Fitness doesn’t have to be complicated, and staying active into old age is more achievable than many people think.

Just do the basics, consistently:

Walk Daily: It’s the most natural activity we can do, and getting outside in nature is great for your head as well as your heart.

Train Your Heart: Get your heart rate up 1–2 times per week. This could be traditional cardio, or something more fun—why not take up a sport like tennis, 5-a-side football, or badminton?

Build Strength: Strength training twice per week is a game-changer. Getting stronger makes everything easier and is the closest thing you’ll find to a fountain of youth.

Stay Mobile: Move your joints through full ranges of motion most days with mobility work or short Yoga flows. Strength training will help too when done properly.

Then—use it!

You’re getting fitter and stronger so you can do things: climb hills, play sports, wrestle the dog into the car, and play games with the kids.

Fitness is for life—not just for the gym.
